IntroductionThe Newport Town Band is a traditional Town Brass Band based in Shropshire. We are an incredibly friendly bunch of musicians who get together once a week simply to make music. Although we don't contest, we do have a busy engagement schedule. Many of our bookings being regular repeat events following previous successes. This approach to Brass Banding suits us well, as many of our members have incredibly busy lives outside of the band, so we're able fit our hobby around our individual lifestyles quite easily. It's difficult to say exactly how old the band is as its history is somewhat sketchy. The earliest references to a band in Newport are found in the "Newport Advertiser" of 25th September 1875, which discusses the formation of a town band. It's not entirely certain whether or not this band was ever formed, but there is clear evidence of a Band in Newport dating from 1911. It is believed that the band folded around 1939 with the outbreak of World War II, but was then reformed in 1954. Since that time the band has run continuously under a number of Musical Directors and has continued to fulfil regular engagements both in the Newport area and further afield. |
